We don't use the word "revolutionary" lightly. But high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is revolutionizing the way we treat prostate cancer in the U.S.
What is HIFU?
Approved by the FDA in October 2015, HIFU is a minimally invasive way of delivering tissue ablation. HIFU uses ultrasound energy focused at a very high level to destroy cancerous tissue. Because of its extreme precision, HIFU dramatically lowers the risk of erectile dysfunction and incontinence, which are common side effects of traditional prostate cancer treatments.
What are the benefits of HIFU?
✓ Minimally invasive
✓ Takes only 1-3 hours to perform
✓ Destroys cancerous tissue with minimal effect to surrounding organs
✓ Does not use radiation
✓ Done on an outpatient basis
✓ Can be used in conjunction with other therapies
✓ Can be repeated, if necessary
✓ Offers an excellent cure rate with minimal complications
✓ Diminishes chance of side effects, such as erectile dysfunction and incontinence
"If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, HIFU should absolutely be part of the discussion. That said, because HIFU is a newer procedure, not all doctors have had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this treatment option. At GBU, we offer consultations, and we're happy to work with patients' doctors."
